Girl Friday

Well, in a highly irregular moment - it's Wednesday and I'm not drinking beer - I have a blog entry. I was going to rename my blog "Girl Friday" (because I blog on Friday's during happy hour, get it?) but the bubble has too much history in it now for me to make such a drastic change. I mean I'm changing MY name. My alter ego needs to stay the same, so Bubble Girl I will remain forever.
We've recently been watching some old movies from the 70's because the Sundance channel is showing some oldies but goodies this month. Typically I can't bring myself to watch them because they're so boring and affected, but movies from the 70's are great fodder, and a good laugh.
Recently I was watching The Candidate with Robert Redford and it struck me how yellow everyone's teeth were. Then it struck me how bad their hair was. Then it just struck me. People were uglier then. They didn't take care of themselves the way we do now. Next came Dog Day Afternoon. Everyone was drenched in sweat through the entire movie. I've never seen people sweat so profusely for so long. Al Pacino always looks oily, but this brought it to a whole new level. You would never see that today. No actress in her right mind would allow a director to film her with mascara running down her face or wet spots under her arms.
SSMG has a different take on it.
Last night we watched the original Taking of Pelham 1,2,3. After the movie he said, "Actors looked like real people back then."
Well, in the absence of teeth whitening and botox, I guess that's what happens. The bar was just lower back then. Hair was expected to be long, but it didn't have to be silky smooth. In fact, the messier, the better. Facial hair was bushy and unkempt. Women weren't expected to be doing pilates every day. Maybe - though I don't remember this - maybe we just didn't focus on physical appearance as much back then as we do now. Is that possible?
